The first thing we want to talk about is your craft. Certain changes may be necessary. On one hand you may need to improve the overall quality of your craft by doing things like using better fabric, thread and finishing.

(2) Change your sewing machine

Well, your sewing machine is the star of your business. The right sewing machine makes the job easier and allows you to do more. I don’t mean that you have to go out and buy a new sewing machine this very instant. What you already have may well be sufficient to do some professional sewing. Maybe all you need is some more accessories and you are good to go.

change your sewing machine
Well, if you are going to sew professionally, there is no doubt that you sewing machine should be up to the job. It is quiet correct that tailors and seamstress with skills can mange to do a lot with just the basic machine and accessories. But in mostly all situations, having the right sewing machine will make your work faster, easier and give you better results. All these things are important when you making a craft to sell to other people.

Read these two posts and you will know what to do.

(3) Choose the kind of sewing business you want to start

The way I see things, there are two broad kinds of sewing businesses you can choose to run. You may choose one or do a bit of both. You can: Offer custom sewing services. Make your own crafts to sell.

Sewing business
Like many other crafting fields, there is a wide variety of products you can create with a sewing business. Like always, I recommend finding and specializing in a profitable niche. You are more likely to find success that way. You can build a strong brand image around the niche craft and earn better wages per hour for your work. Ensure that the craft you sew is something you enjoy making, has a market and is something you can sell at a high profit margin.

Custom sewing services involves a tailor / seamstress to take orders from people. For example, you can be a ladies dressmaker or a tailor for gentleman’s formal wear. You can specialise in something specific like wedding dresses or men’s shirts, or offer a wider range of sewing services.

Making your own crafts to sell means just that. Sew all your favourite crafts and put them up for sale from your home-based shop or online through your own blog, eBay, Etsy etc. For more information on selling online read : Start selling sewing crafts online.

Choose whatever business model you are comfortable with. Some people find it easier to start locally whereas others like to work on their own time and sell only what they choose to make.

(4) Create uniqueness

This is important, in the ‘make or break a business’ kind of a way. Regardless of whether you are taking orders of making your own crafts, an individual imprint is important for many reasons. Being unique is anything that makes you different, better or makes you stand out with your craft. There are many easy ways of creating a unique craft. You do not have to reinvent the wheel, as they say. Just small changes ought to do the trick.

be unique with your crafts
I am a big advocate of trying to make a unique craft. Unique doesn’t mean creating something new every time. But it does mean that you exert your creativity to make the item unique to your business. One of the best things you can do for your sewing business is create a strong brand image. That can only happen when the crafts you sew are distinctly yours. It is usually an effective technique to take existing ideas and make them better or just different according to your own sensitivities.

(7) Where to find paying customers

As we always say, you should be able to identify who your customer is and where to find them. This makes the job of advertising and promotion easy and cost-effective. To begin with, you don’t have to spend a lot of money promoting your business. In fact you can let it happen for free.

These two posts are all you need to know when it comes to finding paying customers for your sewing business:

(8) Pricing your craft

If you want us to keep it really simple, here’s how you should price your craft. Figure out how much it costs to make it and then sell at four times the amount. That should typically earn you a decent hourly wage. But if you want to go about the whole process properly, then this is how you do it. Remember, you should not out-price yourself from the market. If you are charging more than your competitors, make sure you have good reason for it.

Cost of making + Overheads + Hourly wage + Business Profit = Final selling price.

  • Cost of making: Usually the sum total of all raw materials used.
  • Overheads: electricity, depreciation, fuel etc spent every month for your business, to be divided evenly across the number of crafts you sell in that month.
  • Hourly wages: The amount you would like to earn per hour of working.
  • Business profit: The amount of profit you would like to add after adding up the above three costs. Profit is usually charged as a percentage amount like 10% or 30%. Most people forget this step and consider their hourly wages to be the business profit.

  1. Unfortunately none of the craft-sewing companies and their phone numbers are working. I am looking a part time sewing-crafting type of job I can do at home, I called all the numbers. They are not in service.

    1. Thank you, Fola for writing in. Fashion accessories and home decor are both very gratifying items to sew. But then again, which ones aren’t? 🙂 All the best with everything…!

  4. You need a business license in just about every state. If selling children or baby products you need your LLC and insurance. You need to be CPSIA and FTC compliant. I can’t believe you’ve left these things off your list because they are federal and state mandated.

  5. You really should mention compliance with children’s products. It’s illegal to sell without being compliant to CPSIA regulations so it’s very important, and free aside from the cost of tags.

  6. Thank you for sharing all these wonderfully helpful pieces of information. One of my resolutions for this year is to change how I run my side business of sewing. I’m looking forward to using the ideas you described.
    Thank you, Kim
